Chapter Member needs your help!

Greetings all!

This message is from a member looking for your assistance.

Hello!

I am a quarter century member of ASIS as well as Chicago Chapter (not very active).  Good luck with the golf outing and my best to Dick Norwood! The outings were a lot of fun in the "early days".

I am looking for some information—

Photos of lobbies containing guard desk, x-ray machine and metal detector.  Not the industrial-type setting, but more the "office /lobby/building" setting.  "How to be secure and aesthetically pleasing".

Purpose: getting ideas for a new space.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you!

FTC postpones looming Red Flags Rule compliance deadline

By Daniel Gelinas

WASHINGTON—The Federal Trade Commission, which works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices, on May 28 announced it would grant a seven-month extension on Red Flags Rule compliance. Security Systems News earlier covered a CSAA-sponsored webinar that educated alarm company executives on how identity theft and the Red Flags Rule could possibly impact their business. The compliance deadline was originally set for June 1, 2010. The new compliance deadline is December 31.

A call to the FTC Public Affairs office for more on what prompted the extension was referred back to the agency's press release.

"At the request of several Members of Congress, the Federal Trade Commission is further delaying enforcement of the 'Red Flags' Rule through December 31, 2010, while Congress considers legislation that would affect the scope of entities covered by the Rule," the FTC press release reads.

CSAA VP marketing & programs Celia Besore released the following statement to Security Systems News. "The Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) and the Alarm Industry Communications Committee (AICC) support the further delay in enforcing the rules and believe the applicability of the rules should be more narrowly tailored."

Compliance has been postponed a number of times. The Red Flags Rule actually became effective on January 1, 2008, with full compliance for all covered entities originally required by November 1, 2008. The FTC has issued several enforcement policies delaying enforcement of the Rule, according to the release. Most recently, the FTC announced in October 2009 that at the request of certain members of Congress, it was delaying enforcement until June 1, 2010. Since then, the Commission has received another request from Members of Congress for another delay in enforcement of the Rule till Dec. 31, 2010.

The ASIS IT Security Council recently completed a Whitepaper entitled "Cloud Computing and Software As a Service (SaaS): An Overview for Security Professionals".  I'd like to let the Chicago Chapter members know that they can download the whitepaper at http://www.asisonline.org/councils/documents/CloudComputingFinal.pdf.  For members who are interested in more information on the subject, a webinar will be jointly presented by members of the IT Security Council and the Physical Security Council on June 23rd.  The following is a link to the details of the webinar.

https://www.asisonline.org/store/program_detail.xml?id=111969894

Here is an introductory description of the whitepaper:

The traditional electronic security industry, whose origins are rooted in the burglar alarm, is now moving very rapidly toward more complex networked systems and information management. Much discussion has occurred about the role of IT and physical security and the need to work closely together to manage and deliver efficient and risk appropriate security systems for the benefit of organizations. Much of this discussion has occurred around the developing framework for enterprise security risk management and convergence.

As the security and reliability of the Internet and the services offered over it matures, there is a movement toward shared services. Some of the shared services are manifested in technology offerings that have such characteristics as fast implementation, reduced operational expense, and a multi-tenant model sharing common computing resources. The common terminology for this is Cloud Computing, and it is explained in this paper.

A discussion within the security domain is evolving around how Cloud Computing, which has a distinctly different technology and business model (than traditional physical security technologies), might be utilized to deliver security services and applications. The discussion includes such security topics as continuity, reliability, and compliance; and what the associated risk profile and business benefits are in considering such a proposition.
